“Star Wars” enthusiasts can rejoice as the beloved Baby Yoda, or Grogu, is set to grace the silver screen in an upcoming film helmed by director Jon Favreau.
The newly announced movie, titled “The Mandalorian & Grogu,” will see Favreau, known for creating the Disney+ series “The Mandalorian,” taking the reins. The popular show revolves around a helmeted bounty hunter, portrayed by Pedro Pascal, who embarks on a mission to protect a young and endearing alien named Grogu, affectionately dubbed Baby Yoda by fans. While details about the movie’s placement within the live-action series’ timeline remain undisclosed, the series has aired three seasons and is presently undergoing development for its fourth.
Expressing his enthusiasm, Favreau stated, “I have loved telling stories set in the rich world that George Lucas created. The prospect of bringing the Mandalorian and his apprentice Grogu to the big screen is extremely exciting.”
“The Mandalorian & Grogu” marks the first significant “Star Wars” movie project gaining momentum since 2019’s “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker,” which amassed a staggering $1 billion globally and served as the grand finale to the original nine-chapter saga. While subsequent installments in the space opera series, announced by director Patty Jenkins and “Marvel” producer Kevin Feige, failed to materialize, “Star Wars” expanded its universe with two additional live-action TV shows set in the “Mando”-verse: “The Book of Boba Fett,” “Ahsoka,” and the upcoming “Skeleton Crew.”
Collaborating on this anticipated film, Favreau will produce alongside Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy and “Ahsoka” creator Dave Filoni. While providing guidance for the movie, Filoni concurrently works on the second season of “Ahsoka,” starring Rosario Dawson.
Commenting on the project, Kennedy expressed her confidence in Favreau and Filoni, stating, “Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni have introduced two new and beloved characters into Star Wars, and this new story is a perfect fit for the big screen.”
“The Mandalorian & Grogu” spearheads Lucasfilm’s future lineup of feature-length developments, which also includes separate “Star Wars” films directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, James Mangold, and Filoni.
Disney’s release calendar, subject to changes, earmarks an untitled “Star Wars” movie for May 22, 2026. Additionally, another movie set in a distant galaxy far, far away is scheduled for Dec. 18, 2026, with a third “Star Wars” adventure opening on Dec. 17, 2027. Disney, however, has yet to clarify the specifics surrounding these forthcoming cinematic entries.
