In a highly anticipated development, director Danny Boyle and writer Alex Garland are teaming up once again to create a sequel to their groundbreaking zombie film “28 Days Later.” The upcoming installment, aptly titled “28 Years Later,” is envisioned as the inaugural chapter in a new trilogy of films. This collaborative project, represented by William Morris Endeavor, aims to captivate audiences and is slated to be presented to studios and streaming platforms later this year.
The original “28 Days Later,” released in 2002, left an indelible mark on the zombie genre with its sprinting undead hordes, bleak narrative, and innovative use of early digital photography. Starring Cillian Murphy, who was then a relatively unknown actor, the film achieved both critical and commercial success. Boyle directed, and Garland penned the screenplay, turning the modest $8 million production budget into a global box office gross of $84 million. Over time, the film has ascended to the status of a classic in the genre.
The 2007 sequel, “28 Weeks Later,” saw Boyle and Garland serving as executive producers, with Juan Carlos Fresnadillo directing. Despite a slightly increased production budget of $15 million, the film maintained its success, grossing $65 million worldwide.
“28 Years Later” will mark Boyle’s return to the director’s chair, following his work on the 2019 romantic comedy “Yesterday.” Garland, known for directing acclaimed films like “Ex Machina” and “Annihilation,” is attached to write the entire trilogy of zombie entries. Both Boyle and Garland will take on production duties, alongside Andrew Macdonald and Peter Rice, who were involved in the production of “28 Days Later.”
With an ambitious production budget of around $75 million, the project signifies a notable escalation from the franchise’s modest beginnings.
Though not officially attached to the project, Cillian Murphy, who starred in the original film, has expressed enthusiasm about revisiting the “28 Days Later” universe. In a 2022 interview with NME, Murphy revealed discussions with Boyle and Garland about a potential follow-up, emphasizing the enduring appeal of the original film. Boyle, praising Garland’s sequel pitch, acknowledged the opportune timing and the narrative’s focus on England.
As “28 Years Later” moves forward in development, fans can anticipate a thrilling continuation of the “28 Days Later” legacy, promising fresh perspectives on the zombie apocalypse with the creative synergy of Boyle and Garland at the helm.
