DC Studios has found its Supergirl in Milly Alcock, recognized for her portrayal of young Rhaenyra Targaryen in HBO’s “House of the Dragon.” Alcock is set to embody the iconic role of the Woman of Steel in the upcoming feature film “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow,” part of the new DC Universe overseen by James Gunn and Peter Safran. The film is based on the DC comics series of the same name by Tom King and Bilquis Evely.
Although the project awaits a director, Ana Nogueira (“The Vampire Diaries”) was recently appointed to pen the screenplay in November. While James Gunn confirmed Alcock’s casting via Instagram, details regarding her superhero debut remain undisclosed. However, the revelation of Alcock’s role precedes Gunn’s commencement of shooting for “Superman: Legacy,” hinting at a possible appearance alongside her Kryptonian cousin before embarking on her individual journey.
Hailing from Australia, Alcock initiated her acting career on Australian television as a teenager before landing her breakthrough role in HBO’s “Game of Thrones” prequel series. Her portrayal of the determined Targaryen princess garnered widespread acclaim in the show’s initial five episodes, later passing the torch to Emma D’Arcy as the storyline progressed.
Alcock joins a lineage of actresses who have embodied Supergirl, including Melissa Benoist in the CBS and CW series “Supergirl,” which spanned six seasons, and Sasha Calle in the 2023 feature film “The Flash.” Notably, Gunn aims for a fresh start with the new DC Universe.
In the 2022 comic book series “Woman of Tomorrow,” Kara Zor-El’s narrative diverges from the conventional tale of escaping Krypton’s demise as an infant. Instead, she witnesses her home planet’s destruction until the age of 14, adding a layer of complexity to her character. Gunn highlighted this deviation, emphasizing Kara’s unconventional portrayal as “much more hardcore” compared to traditional iterations of Supergirl.
