Jeff Gaspin, the former chairman of NBC Universal Television Entertainment, is making a significant move to Netflix, where he will assume the role of Vice President of Unscripted Series. Gaspin will report to Brandon Riegg, Netflix’s Vice President of Nonfiction Series. This transition marks a notable reversal for the two executives, as Riegg previously worked under Gaspin’s purview during his tenure at NBC.
Gaspin’s return to the executive arena follows his leadership at Gaspin Media, where he served as president. During his time there, Gaspin contributed to several Netflix productions, including “The Tinder Swindler” and “Rhythm & Flow,” along with credits such as “The First Lady.”
Riegg expressed enthusiasm about Gaspin’s arrival, highlighting his extensive experience and talent across unscripted and television genres. Gaspin’s familiarity with Netflix, coupled with his diverse portfolio, positions him as a valuable addition to the company’s unscripted TV landscape.
Gaspin’s illustrious career in unscripted programming includes notable roles such as Executive Vice President of Programming and Production at VH1, where he spearheaded the creation of the acclaimed “Behind the Music” franchise. Additionally, his tenure as President of Bravo saw the success of iconic shows like “Queer Eye for the Straight Guy” and “Project Runway.” Gaspin’s contributions extend to NBC News, where he played a pivotal role in developing “Dateline NBC.”
As Chairman of NBC Universal Television Entertainment from 2009 to 2011, Gaspin oversaw various facets of NBC Universal’s entertainment division, including broadcast and cable networks such as USA Network, Syfy, Bravo, and Oxygen. He also led television production entities Universal Media Studios and Universal Cable Productions during his tenure.
Gaspin humorously referenced his return to the industry, likening it to Al Pacino’s iconic line in “The Godfather Part III.” He expressed excitement about rejoining the realm of unscripted television, citing his past successes and happiness in similar roles at VH1, Bravo, and NBCU.
Gaspin’s appointment at Netflix comes at a time when the streaming giant continues to expand its unscripted content offerings, with popular shows like “Queer Eye,” “Love is Blind,” “Too Hot to Handle,” and the global phenomenon “Squid Game: The Challenge” among its roster.
