Dan Harmon, the creative mind behind the beloved sitcom “Community,” is steadily progressing towards the culmination of the long-awaited “movie” aspect of his famed “Six Seasons and a Movie” prophecy.
Responding to recent claims made by former “Community” star Donald Glover regarding the completion of a script, Harmon clarified to Variety that while Glover’s statement was almost accurate, there’s still some work left to do. Harmon disclosed that he’s in the final stages of crafting the script for the eagerly anticipated film, slated to debut on NBCU’s Peacock streaming service.
Confirming Glover’s assertion that he had informed him about the finished script, Harmon humorously remarked on Glover’s penchant for unreliable sources, jesting that the script is perpetually “almost done.” Offering a glimpse into the storyline, Harmon revealed, “It’s set on the campus of Greendale Community College. I’m super excited about it, and we’re almost done.”
In a recent interview with Entertainment Tonight, Glover had mentioned being informed that “the script was done,” a statement that Harmon confirmed to have exchanged in their conversation, albeit with the caveat that the script was still undergoing final touches.
Reflecting on his creative process, Harmon shared that despite his excitement, the endeavor has led to what he described as “good,” albeit nerve-wracking, moments. He confessed to experiencing emotional turmoil as he delved into the intricacies of the show and its beloved characters, reminiscent of his journey in 2009 when the series first took flight.
Co-writing the script alongside “Community” and “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” writer Andrew Guest, Harmon has enlisted the original ensemble cast for the film, including Glover, Alison Brie, Gillian Jacobs, Joel McHale, Ken Jeong, Danny Pudi, and Jim Rash.
The film’s production marks the realization of the show’s iconic promise of “Six Seasons and a Movie,” a rallying cry that has galvanized a devoted fan base over the years.
In a joint announcement last September, Peacock and Sony Pictures TV unveiled the greenlight for the movie, describing the negotiations as fiercely competitive. As part of the agreement, Peacock has secured non-exclusive rights to the entire six-season “Community” catalog, adding to its extensive content library.
McHale assumes the role of executive producer for the Peacock-exclusive film, alongside Harmon, Guest, Russ Krasnoff, and Gary Foster. The sitcom, renowned for its eclectic cast and humorous take on community college life, promises to deliver an entertaining reunion for fans eagerly awaiting the next chapter in the “Community” saga.
Originally airing on NBC for five seasons before concluding its final season on Yahoo! Screen, “Community” continues to captivate audiences with its blend of humor and heart.
