An animated series adaptation of the acclaimed book series “Wings of Fire” is currently in development at Amazon MGM Studios.
Devotees of author Tui T. Sutherland’s literary universe will undoubtedly welcome this news, marking the second endeavor to bring the beloved books to life on screen. Previously, Netflix had announced a 10-episode series based on the books in 2021, with Warner Bros. Television leading the production and Ava DuVernay attached as executive producer.
The forthcoming series at Amazon MGM Studios boasts an entirely new creative team compared to its Netflix counterpart. While no writer has been announced yet, Marc Resteghini is set to executive produce through his banner, Jack Tar Productions. Resteghini’s production company currently holds an overall deal with Amazon MGM Studios.
The official logline for the series teases an epic tale: “Five young dragons have been raised in secret, destined by prophecy to end a terrible war. But when one of their own is threatened, they decide to escape and find their own fate—saving themselves and the rest of their world along the way.”
With 15 books comprising the main “Wings of Fire” novel collection, alongside numerous supplementary works and a graphic novel adaptation, the franchise has garnered widespread acclaim since its inception by Scholastic in 2012. Boasting a staggering 27 million copies sold globally and a presence on the New York Times bestseller list for over 240 weeks, the series has captivated audiences of all ages.
Resteghini, formerly the head of series development at Amazon MGM Studios (then Amazon Studios), parted ways with the company in 2022 amid restructuring. His tenure at Amazon, which commenced in 2014, witnessed the development and launch of hit shows such as “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” “Jack Ryan,” and “The Underground Railroad.”
Resteghini is represented by Jackoway Austen Tyerman, while Sutherland is represented by WME, Writers House, and Goodman Genow.
