In a significant move for the streaming giant, Netflix has announced Dan Lin as its incoming head of film, succeeding Scott Stuber who will be stepping down in March. Lin’s appointment comes after a period of speculation that included names like Sean Bailey and Stacey Snider following the vacancy in January.
Renowned for his work as a producer on franchises such as “Lego” and Disney’s “Aladdin” remake, as well as his involvement in projects like “It” and the upcoming live-action adaptation of “Avatar: The Last Airbender,” Lin brings a wealth of experience to his new role. His collaboration with Netflix on projects like “The Two Popes” showcases a pre-existing relationship with the streaming platform. He is set to commence his duties on April 1st and will report directly to Bela Bajaria, Netflix’s chief content officer.
Before founding Rideback, Lin served as senior VP of production at Warner Bros., where he played a key role in the development and production of major films including Martin Scorsese’s “The Departed.” Despite previous opportunities, Lin remained committed to Rideback, notably declining an offer to oversee DC Studios last summer.
Lin’s departure from Rideback marks a significant transition for the production company, with Jonathan Eirich and Michael LoFaso stepping in as co-CEOs. Reflecting on his decision, Lin expressed his excitement for the opportunity presented by Netflix, emphasizing his dedication to creating globally resonant films.
As Lin takes the helm of Netflix’s film division, industry observers are curious about the direction he will steer the streaming giant’s film strategy. With a recent emphasis on quality over quantity, exemplified by Stuber’s tenure, speculation arises whether Lin will prioritize pursuing prestigious accolades like the Academy Awards or focus on delivering crowd-pleasing entertainment akin to his previous endeavors at Rideback.
Commenting on Lin’s appointment, Bajaria highlighted his track record of fostering creative talent and his visionary approach to filmmaking. She noted his role in establishing Rideback as a dynamic hub for filmmakers, indicating Netflix’s confidence in Lin’s ability to drive innovation and deliver compelling content.
Dan Lin’s appointment heralds a new chapter for Netflix’s film division, with expectations high for the impact he will make on the streaming platform’s cinematic offerings.
