In a move signaling their commitment to the epic fantasy series, “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” showrunners Patrick McKay and JD Payne are already delving into the narrative tapestry of Season 3. Under their new agreement with Amazon MGM Studios, the duo is diligently crafting storylines for the forthcoming installment, following the successful launch of Season 1 and the imminent premiere of Season 2 later this year on Prime Video.
While the Season 3 writers room has yet to officially convene, McKay and Payne are laying the groundwork with initial story outlines. Shepperton Studios in the U.K. is earmarked as a potential filming location for the upcoming season, marking a shift from the previous setting at Bray Studios for the first two seasons.
Having written and executive produced Season 1 and served as showrunners for Season 2, Payne and McKay have solidified their partnership with Amazon MGM Studios under the banner of their newly established production company, 10:40 PM Productions. This exclusive three-year deal grants Amazon MGM Studios rights to all their television projects.
According to Amazon, “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power,” which premiered in fall 2022, emerged as a resounding success, capturing the top spot as the most-watched Amazon Original across various regions and debuting at #1 on Nielsen’s streaming chart.
