Lykke Li, the Swedish singer-songwriter, unveils her mesmerizing rendition of Johnny Cash’s timeless classic, “Ring of Fire,” exclusively premiering on Variety. Reflecting on her approach to covering the iconic track, Li admits she embarked on the endeavor with a fresh perspective, having primarily been familiar with Cash’s rendition. “To be honest, the only version I’ve ever heard in my whole life is the Johnny Cash version, so I had no real history,” she reveals. “I just went into it pretty blank. I sat down at the piano and the first thing that came out of my mouth was what I recorded.”
Her ethereal interpretation of “Ring of Fire” serves as a poignant addition to the soundtrack of the upcoming Netflix film “Damsel,” set to debut on March 8. Directed by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, the movie narrates the tale of Ellie, portrayed by Millie Bobby Brown, whose fairy tale marriage morphs into a nightmarish ordeal as she becomes entangled in a sinister plot involving an ancient dragon.
Li’s rendition of “Ring of Fire” emerged following an invitation to contribute to the film’s soundtrack shortly after the birth of her second child in August of the preceding year. Collaborating with producer Andrew Sarlo, known for his work with artists like Big Thief and Bon Iver, Li opted for a spontaneous, one-take recording session, a method she had embraced during the creation of her fifth album, “Eyeye,” released in May 2022. Infusing the track with layered synthesizers and textured harmonies, Li’s rendition captivates with its ethereal quality, culminating in a dreamlike finale.
Despite the song’s widespread recognition as one of country music’s greatest compositions, Li admits to being surprised by its origins. Initially penned by June Carter Cash and Merle Kilgore, “Ring of Fire” first found its way to audiences through June’s sister, Anita Carter, before Johnny Cash famously reinterpreted it for his album “Ring of Fire: The Best of Johnny Cash.”
Inspired by June Carter’s personal story behind the song’s creation, Li delves into the haunting nature of love, likening it to stepping into a fiery ring. Reflecting on Cash’s rendition, she acknowledges its enduring appeal, noting its versatility as a lullaby or a spirited anthem. Li’s cover of “Ring of Fire” offers a fresh perspective on the timeless classic, infusing it with her signature style and evocative vocal delivery.
While Li has recently focused on motherhood following the birth of her second child, she hints at forthcoming musical endeavors, fueled by her experiences and inspirations. “The way I work is I do take a fair amount of time off to experience life,” she shares. “So definitely this last experience, I’m pregnant now with ideas. I’m very inspired to go back into the studio. It’s like the circle of life over and over again. Sometimes it’s a baby, sometimes it’s an album.”
Li’s cover of “Ring of Fire” will be available for streaming on March 1, marking another milestone in her illustrious musical career.
