The familiar yet eccentric world of Ghostbusters returns in “Frozen Empire,” offering a blend of nostalgia, comedy, and eye-catching special effects. Building on the foundation laid by its predecessor, “Afterlife,” this installment attempts to balance a plethora of characters and storylines, resulting in a mixed bag of entertaining moments and narrative clutter.
The film sees the reunion of most of the original Ghostbusters, portrayed by Dan Aykroyd, Bill Murray, and Ernie Hudson. While Aykroyd and Hudson bring a touch of sentimentality to their roles, Murray’s impact feels relatively subdued, especially in scenes unrelated to spectral encounters.
Adding to the mix is a modern family dynamic, with Carrie Coon and Paul Rudd as parents and Finn Wolfhard and Mckenna Grace as their fearless teenagers. Grace’s character embarks on a poignant yet fleeting romance with a Billie Eilish-inspired apparition, while additional ghostbusting allies and familiar faces from past films contribute to the bustling ensemble.
Despite its ambitious cast and visually stunning villain – an ice-spewing monster reminiscent of Guillermo del Toro’s creations – “Frozen Empire” struggles to weave a cohesive narrative. The plot, centered on thwarting a supernatural threat to Manhattan while honoring familial legacies, feels more like a series of episodic events than a cohesive cinematic journey.
However, the film’s individual components offer glimpses of brilliance. Coon and Rudd share charismatic chemistry, Nanjiani injects humor with his portrayal of an insecure yet charismatic hustler, and Aykroyd’s presence evokes nostalgic charm. While the script may not break new ground, it delivers consistent laughs, complemented by visually captivating cinematography by Eric Steelberg.
“Frozen Empire” pays homage to the franchise’s roots, embracing the playful spirit of the original under the direction of Ivan Reitman. Balancing comedy with elaborate special effects is no easy feat, yet the film manages to strike a harmonious chord.
While some fans may long for the absence of certain beloved actors, the film’s conclusion hints at a promising future for Ghostbusters enthusiasts. Despite its narrative shortcomings, “Frozen Empire” succeeds in delivering a fun-filled ride that keeps the spirit of busting ghosts alive.
