Margot Robbie, known for her stellar performance in Barbie last year, is gearing up to bring The Sims to the silver screen.
After the immense triumph of transforming the iconic doll brand into a cinematic gem, Robbie is now turning her attention as a producer to one of the most beloved video games of all time.
The Sims, which made its debut in 2000, quickly became a global sensation and remains one of the top-selling games ever, with over 200 million copies sold worldwide.
Director Kate Herron, renowned for her work on the first season of the Marvel series Loki, is set to helm this ambitious project. The screenplay is a collaboration between Herron and Briony Redman.
The Sims is a life simulation game where players embody avatars with customizable traits, skills, and relationships, navigating through everyday tasks like cooking meals and designing homes.
Similar to Barbie, The Sims offers players the freedom to explore their fantasies through their avatars, without a predefined narrative or autonomy.
Details about the movie are still under wraps, including its release date.
Interestingly, this isn’t the first attempt at a Sims movie. Fox initially planned a film in 2007, but the project faced challenges and was ultimately shelved in 2019 after the Disney-Fox merger.
Fans have mixed reactions to the news, with some expressing excitement, while others are curious about the movie’s execution.
One enthusiastic fan tweeted: “OMG, I can’t wait for this!” Another echoed the sentiment, predicting it to be as successful as Barbie.
However, some are skeptical, with one Twitter user questioning how the concept will translate to film.
In a surprising turn, Robbie revealed her intention to take a break from acting on screen.
“Everyone’s asking if I’m taking a break,” she shared with Deadline. “But as a producer, breaks aren’t really in the cards. Plus, I think everyone needs a break from seeing me too often. I might step back for a bit.”
Robbie added, “If I jump into another project too soon, people might say, ‘Her again? We just had a summer with her.’ I’ll take my time to decide what’s next.”
