Brooke Boney, the popular Today presenter, has made a surprising announcement regarding her departure from the breakfast show in the coming months as she prepares to embark on a new journey to the UK.
During the Friday morning broadcast, the former Triple J reporter revealed her decision to leave the show after the conclusion of the 2024 Paris Olympics in July and August, citing her acceptance to study at Oxford University.
“I have some significant news to share with you all this morning. I’ve been offered a place at Oxford University later this year, which means I’ll be bidding farewell to the show after the Olympics,” she stated.
Preferring not to delve deeply into the details at this moment, Boney expressed a mix of emotions, describing the news as both good and challenging.
“It has been a lifelong dream of mine to pursue studies at an international university, and the timing feels right to take this step,” she added.
Boney intends to spend the following year at Oxford University, focusing on a Masters of Public Policy and contributing to the community, as confirmed by Channel 9.
“I felt that if I didn’t seize this opportunity now, I might never do so. At my age, leaving now to pursue further studies means I’ll still be relatively young at 38 when I return,” she explained to the media outlet.
Despite her imminent departure, Boney, who initially joined the Today team as a show business reporter in 2019 and transitioned to a news presenter role in January 2023, has not ruled out a potential return to television in the future.
“I would love to have the opportunity to collaborate with Nine again and explore what that might entail,” she remarked.
Reflecting on her time as a presenter on Today, Boney expressed immense gratitude for the privilege and unexpected journey she has experienced.
“Being part of Today has been an incredible privilege, something I could never have imagined for myself when I was younger. We are fortunate to wake up every day and share moments of joy and information with our viewers,” she shared.
The announcement of Boney’s departure evoked heartfelt reactions from her colleagues on the morning show, with co-hosts Karl Stefanovic and Sarah Abo expressing pride and support for her decision.
“We are incredibly proud of you,” Stefanovic conveyed.
Viewers also took to social media to express their mixed emotions, sending both well wishes and messages of admiration to the departing presenter.
Boney’s departure marks the end of a significant chapter on Today, leaving behind a legacy of professionalism and dedication to informing and entertaining audiences.
